I'm having a similar issue when trying to connect a Samsung i730 device w/ WM5 using a Serial USB connection (RNDIS will not work for what I need). I'm using a utility from another manufacterer (HTC) called 'USB Switch'.

It's supposed to force the device to connect with ActiveSync via a USB serial connection rather than using a RNDIS (IP) connection. Windows recognizes the device being connected in Device Manager, but AS is unable to recognize a mobile device. I'm assuming the problem is that Samsung didn't create a USB driver, thus AS is unable to recognize the device when connecting this way.

I also found that ActiveSync 4.2 is quite different from ActiveSync 3.7.1. The documented and known difference is of course removal of WiFi sync, but there are other differences. For example, there are several new processes that continously run, whether A S is active or not. And there seems to be a log file that grows unbounded and cannot be deleted due to being locked by running processes.
